Welcome to Our Holiday Home

Dreaming of your next Lake District Adventure

Our traditional, cozy, one bedroom dog friendly Lake District holiday cottage enjoys a great location within the spectacular Lake District National Park. We are just two miles from Lake Windermere in the historic village of Backbarrow and nestled in the Leven Valley between Haverthwaite Heights and the Cartmel Fell.

Backbarrow is a short drive from some of the main tourist hotspots, surrounded by beautiful unspoilt countryside, making it a great place to relax and unwind, but it is also very handily placed for exploring the Lake District, giving you the best of both worlds for your time in The Lakes.

There are some beautiful countryside walks right from the door (Haverthwaite Heights and Bigland Tarn are amongst our favourites) and the cottage is a great base for exploring the Lake District, being less than 2 miles from the many attractions of Lake Windermere and also just 8 miles from the seaside and promenade at Grange-over-Sands. Cartmel, Bowness, Ambleside, Grasmere, Hawkshead and Coniston are all within easy reach of the cottage.

When we bought and refurbished Birch House, it was important for us to have somwhere traditional, comfortable, relaxing and homely that we could use to escape, unwind and relax, but at the same time be able to easily reach the many beautiful villages that The Lakes has to offer, and Cartmel, Bowless, Windermere and Hawkshead are all less than 10 miles away to name just a few.

We regularly post news and information on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/birchhousecottage) and Instagram page (www.instagram.com/1birch_house) and we are always available to answer any questions you may have.

We are both passionate about the Lake District and spend as much of our spare time as we can up here, enjoying the great outdoors, exploring the Lakes, walking, running and cycling the fells as well as enjoying the occasional afternoon tea and spa treat!

We look forward to welcoming you to Birch House, and we hope you enjoy your stay.

About Birch House

Cozy, Comfortable and Welcoming

Super Comfortable king size bed to rest and recharge.

Birch House is a traditional, cozy, one bedroom dog friendly holiday cottage and accomodates 2 adults and up to 2 dogs.

We are close to some of the most beautiful towns and villages in the South Lakes, with Windermere, Bowness-on-Windermere, Cartmel, Hawkshead and the Victorian seaside resort of Grange-over-Sands all less than 10 miles away, and Coniston, Ambleside and Grasmere all within an easy 20 mile drive.

This cottage is a home from home for us, and we have decorated and furnished it to a high standard, using materials, fixtures and furnishings from the Lake District where possible, to complement the natural beauty of the surroundings.

Our traditional cottage is open plan downstairs and has one bedroom with super comfortable king sized bed, cozy log burner (there is also electric central heating), WiFi and smart TV, a fully equipped kitchen and modern bathroom and has unreserved on street parking.

The cottage is dog friendly and we do not charge any extra for up to 2 well behaved pets unlike most other cottages. We ask that dogs are not allowed on the couch or bed, and not left alone in the cottage, and please note that we do not have a garden.

Please note that the cottage is NOT baby/child friendly due to the log burning fire and open stairs, and for this reason we do not accept bookings with children or babies.

Further information is on the "details" and "local information" pages, as well as an up to date availability calendar, prices and secure booking link, whilst reviews from previous guests are avaiable on the "guestbook" page. Please dont hesistate to get in touch if you have any questions before making your booking and we will be glad to help.

What our guests think about Birch House Cottage

Really enjoyed our third stay at Birch house.
The weather challenged us but as I always say there’s no such thing as bad weather just bad clothing.
The cottage is cosy, excellent facilities, luxury furnishings and near lots of local attractions and amenities.
We loved Tarn Howes and a “freedom of the lake” ticket allowing us to travel up and down lake Windermere, stopping off in Bowness then onto Ambleside.
We also managed some R&R time in the cottage with the added bonus of the log fire, the kitchen is fully equipped and the cottage is styled that as cooking your evening meal you can sit on the bar stools chatting with some tunes on, then can relax with a vino and your favourite streaming service on the smart TV.
Thank you to Stephen & Maria for a stunningly appointed cottage home from home.

We have had a lovely stay in your cottage.

We especially loved the comfy bed, the log fire and the fact that you have catered for EVERYTHING!

Our favourite walk was Clappersgate to Wray Castle, the cafe at the castle serves delicious food.
