We’ve just come back from a fantastic stay at Birch house.
It’s my first time in the lakes, and it’s safe to say we will be back.
Birch house was perfect for us, and our dog Dexter.
It was home from home. It was a really comfortable stay, and a well presented cottage. It had a perfect starter kit and a pub not too far round the corner.
Steve & Maria also sent a really handy guide which covered everything, including walks, places to eat, other villages and directions if you want to walk straight from the cottage, which was super helpful.

Backbarrow is beautiful and it was a good base to go further afield.
Can’t wait to return next year!
Thank you guys!

The cottage is well equipped, clean, cozy, a great base to visit all the local towns, easy access to walks, loved the log burner, Brought my dog with me, suprised at how dog friendly the lakes are these days, the majority of shops, and even places to eat allow them in, a great place to visit, beautiful scenery, would recommend to anyone.

Really enjoyed our third stay at Birch house.
The weather challenged us but as I always say there’s no such thing as bad weather just bad clothing.
The cottage is cosy, excellent facilities, luxury furnishings and near lots of local attractions and amenities.
We loved Tarn Howes and a “freedom of the lake” ticket allowing us to travel up and down lake Windermere, stopping off in Bowness then onto Ambleside.
We also managed some R&R time in the cottage with the added bonus of the log fire, the kitchen is fully equipped and the cottage is styled that as cooking your evening meal you can sit on the bar stools chatting with some tunes on, then can relax with a vino and your favourite streaming service on the smart TV.
Thank you to Stephen & Maria for a stunningly appointed cottage home from home.

Our favourite walk was Clappersgate to Wray Castle, the cafe at the castle serves delicious food.

I came up with my dog for some peace and some walking. Super quiet location but close to main routes. Beautiful cottage. Cozy, clean, modern. Plenty to access by foot, bus, rail or car. Every possible convenience in the place and everything works well. My weeks weather was awful so it was lovely to return here every night. Light the fire and open the wine! No shop within easy reach on foot but a pub and 2 hotels you can eat at. Nearest shop 2 miles. Windermere/Bowness/Ambleside on your doorstep. Bus stop 100yds away.
Really lovely spot will now be a regular visitor.

This fabulous cosy little cottage, located a mile from Newby Bridge, is perfectly situated for exploring the south Lakes. The cottage is very comfortable, quiet and well equipped and the king size bed was so comfy. Tess, my 8month old cockapoo thoroughly enjoyed her stay walking her little legs off in Grasmere ascending to Easedale Tarn and exploring Keswick doing the Keswick to Threkeld railway route as well as walking around Derwent Water.
A wonderful 4-days - would highly recommend Birch House Cottage to anyone

What a fabulous cottage for 2 , Birch Cottage is 💕
Spotlessly clean, comfy bed, cosy log burner, wonderful welcome pack & birthday surprise 🥳.
Steve & Maria have really thought of everything, from the highly informative welcome information before arrival to being on hand for helpful tips on the local area.
Birch Cottage is perfectly situated for exploring Lake Windermere and the stunning surrounding area.
Walks from the doorstep and a fantastic spa hotel to relax with a short walk in the village.
Thank you to Steve & Maria for thinking of everything and making our 4 night stay so memorable.
100% highly recommend Birch Cottage to anyone wishing to visit The Lakes.

This is a super little cottage with everything you could need-home from home with all the tasteful accessories that give it a feeling that it’s loved. We found the location good with easy access to the south lakes & less than an hour from Keswick/north lakes. Monty, our mini schnauzer, also enjoyed his stayed!

W/C 16th Oct……. we had a lovely stay here with our Welsh Springer Spaniel, Hibbert. The location is perfect, the cottage has everything you could ever need and the weather was amazing.

Steve and Maria kept us fully informed throughout and dealt with a minor issue on our arrival very quickly, thank you.

There is so much to do right on your doorstep. We never used the car until our last day.

* Take a right out of the cottage and just up the hill on your right is a footpath to Lower Haverthwaite. It takes you down toward the main road, right at the bottom will take you up to the bus stop (little trip into Ulverston). Left will take you under the subway then over the bridge across the river Leven. You can then take a left to Haverthwaite Steam Train or take a walk over to the Haverthwaite Heights, cross the rail track and you are in the ancient woodland. A lovely walk.

* Haverthwaite Steam Train and boat trip to Bowness or Ambleside is another must. Get to the station early and have a bacon sandwich from the cafe, delicious. We sat right at the back of the train and had the full view of the surroundings on the trip up to Lakeside. Boat to Bowness was great and well worth it.

* Take a left and cross over to the Whitewater Hotel (dog friendly area outside only), you can access the woodland walk from here also.

* From the Whitewater, follow the river to your right and you’ll reach the Lakeland Motor Museum. A must see, we spent ages in here, really enjoyed it. Next door is the Campbell Bluebird exhibition, another must see.

* Crakeside fish & chips - best fish & chips EVER!

There just wasn’t enough time to fit everything in!

The facilities in the cottage are more than adequate, probably the best we have had. Google device, Smart TV, great coffee machine (we took some pods with us and Steve and Maria provide a selection too). Condiments/oil etc and cleaning products also provided. Books, DVDs, games. Great shower and bed was very comfy. Just a bit of traffic noise first thing if you sleep with the window open.

We had a wonderful stay, thank you Steve & Maria 😊

Our first time visiting the Lakes - we had an amazing stay at Birch House Cottage.
The location is perfect and we made use of the dog walking books at the cottage - we had some lovely days out and packed so much into our 4 days - walking lakes, exploring villages and taking in the wonderful views. The cottage is cosy, clean and homely and had everything we needed – had the best night’s sleep in the comfortable bed.
Chester our springer spaniel had the best time – paddling in the lakes and enjoying some wonderful walks – we would light the log burner in the evening and he would lay in front of it exhausted.
Thank you Stephen and Maria for a great stay.

The log burner wow, and the bed I swear it's the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. The location is spot on with lots of lovely walks.

The log burner made it extra cosy in the evening!

It’s in a great location for exploring the Lake District.

Birch House Cottage proved an ideal temp home and location for our annual visit to the Lakes, this time with our dogs Rocco and Alfie. The cottage had everything we needed and lots of ideas as to what to do. We can recommend the local Lakeside Car Museum and the Queens Head Troutbeck for a sunday dinner. Some sunshine as well as rain. Very central for all of our trips - Windermere, Ulverston, Cartmel, Hawkshead and Grasmere. Owners Stephen and Maria very responsive and superb hosts. Thank You.

We have had 5 amazing days staying at Birch House Cottage .
It really is a home from home with everything you could need . The whole place was absolutely spotlessly clean and of lovely quality . The bed was so comfy which was very welcome after a day walking up the fells . We didn’t need to use the log burner but it looked very cute and I imagine would be very cozy in the winter .
All kitchen appliances were really nice ( although we only needed to use the kettle ) . The goodies left for us were a really nice and welcome touch . We found the location was really handy for most things and we enjoyed some great walks from the cottage as well as some mountains a drive further away .

We have stayed at Birch House a few times now, both with and without our four legged pal Millie. The cottage is beautifully decorated and furnished. We have everything we need and more, and it is in a really good location for access to some of the quieter parts of the Southern Lakes. The beachfront at Ulverston is a particular favourite with Milllie.
We are so taken with the area we have started house hunting around Ulverston!

We stayed here for four nights from 14th-18th Feb. This was our first trip to the Lake District (and the furthest I have driven - 4hours 30mins from Norfolk), the cottage was in a perfect location, quiet with amazing views all around. The cottage had everything we needed after a long day of walking, especially the log burner, lovely bath and the bed was so comfortable. The guide provided by Stephen and Maria was very useful when planning out our walks for each day. We walked to Cartmel from the cottage (4.5 miles each way), stopped at a pub for lunch and took back some of the famous sticky toffee pudding from the local shop. We drove to different spots along the lake and parking was easy to then complete our walks. All in all, a brilliant location and more importantly the dog is now absolutely exhausted and perhaps will let us have a lay in tomorrow...!

We will definitely be back :)

We had a fabulous Mon to Fri stay in Birch House with the best weather ever & no rain! The cottage is situated in a great position for exploring either walks from the door or further afield. The cottage itself is furnished to a high standard & was spotlessly clean. It was really comfy & well equipped with some lovely touches including a lovely welcome pack. Great online contact with Stephen & Maria you can tell they care about your comfort. Our two Border Terriosts certainly enjoyed the numerous walks up & down the hills, in & out the forrests & plodging in Lake Windermere! We would have no hesitation in recommending the cottage it is exactly as described. Thank you for a great holiday.

I was lucky enough to squeeze in 2 nights at the cottage in between lockdown restrictions. What a lovely place. Easy to find and really convenient for travelling around the Lakes area. The cottage was full of personal, homely touches, with a really comfortable bed. The log burner was gorgeous and the dog was very happy lying out in front of it! And reliable Wifi for watching a film later.
I did one of the walks from the cottage that are suggested by Maria & Steve in their "pack" - got a bit lost on the way, but that all adds to the fun! We also had a day in Ambleside (20 minutes away) and walked to Stock Ghyll Force and then up Wansfell to see the snow.
I'll definitely be back for more exploring and relaxing! 😊

Just home from a well needed break which was made perfect by staying in a beautiful cottage. Birch House is so comfortable with everything you will need and the attention to detail and finishing touches are amazing. Well located, a little further South than we normally stay but still in a great location. Actually mean't we did a few different walks! We will definately return.

Carl and I have just had four nights in this beautiful home from home cottage.
Everything is of very high standard, very clean and extra precautions taken in this current climate.
The bed was very comfy and the bedding smelled gorgeous all week.
Thank you to Stephen & Maria for letting this cottage out to guests it really is a little Gem in a stunning part of the lakes.
Kindest regards
Carl & Janet ( and our pooch Milo)

We had the most amazing stay at Birch House. It was so clean and everything we needed was there. It was really dog friendly and our little dog enjoyed her stay too. The customer care has been brilliant since we got in touch to discuss a booking. We will definitely be returning. Thanks x

Wonderful cottage in a wonderful location! Felt very warm and cosy, which made it feel like a home from home. On arrival the cottage was spotless, we even had contacted the owners to tell them we was that impressed.
Amazing contact throughout, nothing was too much for Steve to help with.
We will be returning as soon as we can!

We stayed at at the Birch house cottage for four nights in August, lovely place to recharge your batteries after a day exploring the Lake District, great amenities, super comfortable bed and beautiful walks on the doorstep. Would highly recommend the cottage to anyone. Thanks Steve and Maria.

We stayed in this fantastic home from home cottage in July 2020. The communication from the owner was spot on, and the cleanliness was fantastic. The cottage is ideal for exploring some amazing local walks, and also gave us the opportunity to climb Hevellyn and Scafell Pike.
We will definitely consider visiting, this cozy and welcoming cottage again! X

Just had a two night stay here. A beautiful little 1 bed cottage which happens to be dog friendly. The log fire is fab for cosy nights in. The kitchen was well equipt. The bedroom was large with a kingsize bed. The whole cottage is tastefully decorated. A big thumbs up from us and highly recommended, whether it be a nice rest from work or a good old walking break 👍

Beautiful cottage done to a high standered a home from home, very clean and comfortable, the great location is what make's it even more of a relaxing stay but still the main attractions that the lake district has to offer are with-in easy reach.
Great communication with Steve and Maria during/before and after the stay.
