Welcome to Birch House Cottage, our lovely one bedroom dog friendly Lake District cottage.
We are Steve and Maria Masters, and Birch House Cottage is our pride and joy, our home from home in the Lake District.
Our cottage is only available for direct booking through the secure booking link on our website, meaning you get a great price by avoiding commissions and agents fees charged by the big online agencies which bump up the price.
Birch House is furnished it to a very high standard because we want our guests to feel at home when they walk in the door just the way that we do.
Our cottage has one bedroom with a super comfortable king size bed, making it the ideal pleace for couples or solo travellers as you are not paying extra for space that you don't need. We price our cottage competitively, and we don’t charge extra for dogs either, meaning you get the best possible price for your dog friendly Lake District short break.
We have a well equipped kitchen if you do plan on cooking breakfast or meals, a smart TV and a selection of books and games for your entertainment and a bath and shower. Whilst we have central heating for your comfort, the log burner really comes into its own in the colder months for cozy evenings.
The lovely reviews on our Facebook page and website and the number of repeat bookings are the best possible signs that our guests really do appreciate the homely touches we provide.

We are outdoor enthusiasts, and our love of the Lake District runs deep, so if you plan on doing any walking, hiking, or any of the various events like fell runs, marathons and cycles in the Lake District please do let us know as the chances are that one or both of us have done it previously and can provide some advice.
Maria has done the infamous Brathay 10 in 10 (twice) along with the Langdale Marathon, Windermere Marathon and Coniston 14 to name but a few. Steve has multiple completions of the Lakeland 50, along with the Lap, Lakes In a Day and the Fred Whitton Cycle Challenge! Together we are ticking off the 214 Wainwright Fells too!
We are also foodies, so whatever you are looking for from a hearty pub lunch, a luxury afternoon tea treat, or even just a great spot for a picnic during a hike we can definitely give you a few recommendations.
Birch House is in a great location in the village of Backbarrow, just 2 miles from Lake Windermere and has some lovely walks right from the door, and we have plenty of guide books and local interest books in the cottage for those looking to really explore the Lakes.
A number of great attractions including the Whitewater Hotel & Spa (spa facility, bar, restaurant), Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway (steam train and tea rooms), Cafe Ambio, Backbarrow (cafe), Lakeland Motor Museum, Windermere Lake Cruises, Cliffhanger Rooms - The #1 Ranked Lake District and Cumbrian Escape Rooms and Lakes Aquarium are all within 2 miles of the cottage while the local dog friendly pub the The Anglers Arms, Haverthwaite is less than a mile away.
